Handy Moving Tips
You've just signed the paperwork on a new home, congrats!
We've rounded up some tips to keep you sane and totally prepared during the move.
Get rid of clutter.
If you haven't worn it or looked at it in the past year and it holds no sentimental value, get rid if it!
Contact a local charity, like Habitat for Humanity, or sell it on Craigslist. Look at the move as a way to start off fresh!
Manage packing smartly.
Get a box-labeling system in place. Numbered boxes, color-coding by room, and a master list with inventory are key elements. Make a room-by-room packing schedule and start packing! Start packing up the things you need least, first. Holiday decorations, kitchen gadgets, the kinds of things you will not need for a little while. Gather valuable paperwork, jewelry, and small family heirlooms. Keep these special items separate from your moving boxes and make a plan for transporting them by hand. We do offer packing services if you cannot find the time.
Don't pack your closet. Let us pack it for you! We can bring several wardrobe boxes on the day of the move. Southern Moving will take clothing right on the hangers and, woosh, your clothes will be in and out.
Switch your utilities & change your address. As soon as you have a closing date, call the utility companies and set up a service switch. Don't forget to change your address with USPS, it can be done online and will prevent any lapses in mail delivery. Change your address with credit cards and magazines.
Goodbyes are never easy. Make saying goodbye easier.
Moving from a home with sentimental value can be gut wrenching. Make sure you take a final family photo outside your old place. A great idea to ease the sadness, create a Pinterest board with things you're excited to do in the new home, like dream decorating or new things to do in that part of town.
Bring the basics, separately. If you can, plan to take basic supplies over the day before. Setting up the bathrooms in advance will bring some normalcy to the chaos of the boxes. Have each family member pack a suitcase with a couple of changes of clothes, pajamas, and hygiene items.
Don't get hangry.
Moving can be stressful for everyone. For little ones, pack a bag of snacks, coloring books, and things to keep them busy and out from underfoot. Pack a cooler with drinks and snacks to keep everyone happy and full.
Discover the local resources. Take a walk around your new neighborhood and be sure to introduce yourself to people you pass by. This is the best way to find out who is the best babysitter, what is the best place for pizza. Ya know, the important things!
